Although we are individuals, a substantial part of who wer are, is generated by our interaction with others. As children, we embody many of the personality traits and interchanges of our parents. We are then heavily bombarded by others and society in general, from TV billboards and so on. Our desires and hopes are shaped in ways incalculable to the individual. An individual is merely a knot in the social fabric. S/he plays a role, functional, even if that is for entertainment purposes.

People in power, and those in influential think-tanks, alter society. Their individual actions alter the course of history. However, how did these individuals arrive at their power positions? Often, it is because they demonstrate the correct qualities to fulfil the role required. Hence, in a sense, institutions use people to perpetuate themselves, whether a national government or international company, or even an informal club.

Therefore, if change is to occur, it is important to acknowledge that real change must occur in the social fabric, in the institutionalised mechanisms. That is, for laws to change, for human relations to alter sufficiently, for certain power dynamics which prevent escalation, we need to design sustainable social systems.
